Lawless is een misdaaddrama uit 2012 van regisseur John Hillcoat (The Road, The Proposition) over een bende smokkelaars in Virginia tijdens de Grote Depressie. Niemand minder dan Nick Cave hielp Hillcoat met het scenario, terwijl hij ook de soundtrack van de film verzorgde. Cave en collega-muzikant Warren Ellis vormen de kern van The Bootleggers, een country- en bluegrass-ensemble dat een reeks gastartiesten als Emmylou Harris, Ralph Stanley en Mark Lanegan verwelkomde voor deze soundtrack.
